Summer of Fun - Adventure Numero UNO

So, remember how I was going to blog about all the adventures I had planned for D'Nell's Summer of Fun 2012?

Yeah, I was too busy having fun.

The first OFFICIAL activity was to go to the Sun Tunnel's to watch the summer solstice. In case you don't know me or have NEVER spent a significant amount of time in a car or Chinese train with me...let me clue in...

I am pretty fun and my mind has a million random things in it at any given moment.

During this 7ish hour car ride (3ish hours there and 3ish hours back) we played my all time favorite game:

WHAT IF.

What if you you were forced to get a tattoo what would it be and where would you get it?

(Yes, someone would get a tramp stamp...NOT ME)

OR

What if I gave you $10,000...would you let me punch you as hard as I could in the FACE?

(Heck YES I would...pretty much any day of the week).

Suzie, Gen, and Sarah were more than willing participants in this first adventure.

(Gen and Suzie...they ARE sisters, I am glad you asked)

(Me and Sarah. his is a necessary pose for Summer of Fun activities, I am glad you asked.)

Also, Summer of FUN adventures are better when there is a guy with a spear and a girl with a hula hoop requesting to pose ANYWHERE. See above. (She totally reminded me of Terusha).

The Sun Tunnels are an Earthworks art project in the west (and I mean past Wendover NEVADA and then barely back into Utah) Utah desert. They basically four concrete tunnels positioned exactly where the sun will shine exactly through the center during the Summer and Winter solstice's.

And basically, they are awesome and take beautiful pictures.

WHO'S in for NEXT year???

p.s. there was a pre-summer of fun demolition derby I attended...but I didn't get any pictures. BOO.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!
This picture is from the Thomas Family party on Friday night. I bought this wig for my mom to wear. I thinks she is totally rocking it. Everyone was supposed to be giving their best "zombie" face.

Between Now and December 31st

I decided today that between now and December 31st I will read the Book of Mormon. Cover to Cover. What a great way to end the year.

Sno-Cones

Sno-Cones = HEAVEN ON EARTH.

Seriously.

Friends, I went with my new friend Tiffany (from my ward) to get a sno-cone tonight.

It. Was. AWESOME.

It's the sno-cone place in the parking lot of Rite-Aids in Bountiful. YUM. And cheap! Best combo ever! (and they will be open until September 17th!!)

Here is the best part. I got a cherry mango with 3 creams. For $1.95. Amazing. I knew the girl working and let me try her...

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Wait for it...

Ready? You are not going to believe this...

CINNAMON with CREAM sno-cone. Kind of weird. DELICIOUSLY weird. I am so getting it next time.

Ahhh...Sno-Cones.

Just Call Me Master

Tonight is my very last MBA class. I thought I would feel different than I do.

The best word to describe how I am feeling is: Bittersweet.

Don't worry, I will soon get over the "bitter" part so I can enjoy the SWEET!

Just so you know...I am pretty excited to see David Sedaris this week. If you don't know who he is...well...you should.

I Can Hardly Believe It!

I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

AND...I can hardly believe it!

Being 6 credits away from completing my MBA seemed like an impossible dream just a short while ago. I remember during the first semester thinking "this is going to take FOREVER" and it felt like I would never be done.

BUT GUESS WHAT?

I'm almost done!

Here is the real question: What am I going to do when I am done?

SERIOUSLY.

What goals should I set?
What is my next move in my career?
Where should I live?
How should I celebrate?
What is the next big thing to tackle?
Will all of the people I have practically ignored for the last two years ever talk to me again?
Is it time to get rid of the corrolla? (Okay, this has nothing to do with graduation...but is a real question.)
What trips should I go on?
What habits do I need to break?
What habits do I need to start?
And this list goes on and on and on...

But let's not lose focus here...

I AM ALMOST DONE!

How Did I Get Here?

Choices.

I have been thinking a lot lately about choices. Specifically, about the choices I have made that have gotten me here.

Here. Where I am now, in every aspect of my life.

For some of the "here's" I can trace specific choices back to find what seems like the "original choice" that led me here. Other "here's" are much more tricky, and for them, I have no clear concept of how I got here.

After I contemplate how I got here, I think about what choices I made and what if I made a different choice. Where would have that different choice gotten me? What would I have gained and what would I have missed out on? What "here" would I be living?

I do know this, that with out FAITH and TRUST in my Savior I would have less peace and more anxiety. I would have less happiness and more fear. I would be less.

Is "here" where I want to be for every aspect of my life? Maybe, maybe not. But together with my Heavenly Father, through prayer, I know the "here" I am moving towards will be more right than where I am now.

The One Where I Experienced A New Culture

First let me just say this picture should be burned but instead I am sharing it on my blog.

Last year I went to a "white trash" party. Super fun. Jerome (the guy right behind me) had wanted to have a WT party for sooooo long and finally he set the date. We had hot dogs and ramen. Drinks in a kiddie pool and all sorts of fun games.

As you can see from the above picture I got really into it going so far to create a back story. My WT name was Branddean, I was named after my two dads, Brandon and Dean. My mom didn't know who the actual father was and Brandon and Dean refused to take a paternity test in case the gov'nment put their information in the system. I had an accent and everything. I had sooooo much fun...maybe too much fun.

Which is why I must tell you I have finally after a year decided that Branddean must go away FOREVER.

Sorry world.

It's HERE

Football season is FINALLY here and well underway. I am very excited to have season tickets again this year (thanks to my brother-in-law Dennis). You may not have known this about me but I love sports but only when I get to go to the stadium, arena, ice rink, etc and watch it live. There is nothing I love more than going to games and Ute Football games is only second to Aggie Hockey games.

This season I am looking forward too:
* The excitement that builds as I am headed to the game.
* Wearing red (except the black out game)...I look HOT in red!
* Tailgating.
* Singing the Utah Man song after every touchdown or field goal.
* Learning about a new penalty at every game (it seems like the Utes get an awful lot of penalties...who knew there were so many different penalties)
* Sitting with Shanni at every game.
* Cheering, screaming and grrrrr-ing.
* Basically EVERYTHING!

Here is to a great season....GOOOOO UTES!

The One Where I Smell Like Smoke

A couple of weekends ago my friends and I went up Millcreek canyon to have tinfoil dinners. SUPER FUN! (With a few exceptions)

Here is my list of tips for a successful tinfoil dinner outing:
1. Don't ask if we remembered to bring wood. Of course we brought wood...we aren't idiots.
2. Wear a cute outfit for pictures (see above).
3. Invite as many CERTS as possible.
4. If the women start the fire don't criticize...jut praise.
5. Bring cards games.
6. Limit the amount of card games Amber can play (she always wins which is NO fun).
7. Don't let me get trapped talking (or rather listening) to a certain person.
8. Bring candy & especially chocolate.
9. Don't ask me if I brought a mini axe. Of course I didn't. Why would I? The fire was going fine 30 minutes ago until the BOYS starting messing around with it.
10. Have friend Russian children next door that invite you to be in "the club".

CERTS: It's Just What We Do

Remember when I went through CERT training? Cool, right?

Well, what is even cooler than going through CERT training is having a photo shoot with your CERT buddies in preparation for making a CERT calendar. Let's just say 2011 is the year of the CERT.

My cute (extremely talented) friend Kristy took the photo's of Heather, Erin, and myself. Let's just say after you see these you will finally realize that you will pretty much want us around in an emergency.

You can check out some of the pictures (and Kristy's amazing wit) here: Chillygator.

AND

You can check out the full photo shoot here: Green Hills Photography

Ya...I know we are awesome!

How To: Birthday Budget

Happy Birthday to ME!

Okay, a quick lesson on how to figure out how much you can spend on yourself for your birthday:

Your age times a X = Birthday Budget!
example: IF you will be say 32, and X for you is $10, then 32 * $10 = $320 to spend for your birthday!

What is a birthday budget? It's the amount of money you can spend on yourself for your birthday with out feeling guilty.

Of course, there are lots of things that can influence X.

I love the birthday budget!

(**this does not imply I am spending $10 * my age on myself this year...it was just an example.)

Looking Forward 2010

I love "new" things and that includes a new year. I have been thinking over the last month or so about what 2010 would mean for me. What goals would I set, what goals would I abandon, where would I be?

My thoughts tended to gravitate to the usual "pay down debt, diet, work out more, blah, blah, blah". I have set these goals many (MANY) times in the past and others like them and trust me when I say I don't feel like I have made a dent. Would 2010 be like other years? Or would this year be different? I often feel like I am running in place, and have been for several years. My life isn't moving in the direction I would like it to go, but feels like I am continually running in circles or taking a step forward only to take a step or two backwards. Would I break the cycle this year?

When I got home from Christmas vacation I decided to read the January Ensign and my heart was "pricked" when I read these words.

"Remember Lot's wife (Luke 17:32)...

My theme comes in the next verse. Surely, with the Lord’s counsel—“look not behind thee”—ringing clearly in her ears, Lot’s wife, the record says, “looked back,” and she was turned into a pillar of salt (see verse 26).

Just what did Lot’s wife do that was so wrong? As a student of history, I have thought about that and offer a partial answer. Apparently, what was wrong with Lot’s wife was that she wasn’t just looking back; in her heart she wanted to go back. It would appear that even before she was past the city limits, she was already missing what Sodom and Gomorrah had offered her. As Elder Neal A. Maxwell (1926–2004) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles once said, such people know they should have their primary residence in Zion, but they still hope to keep a summer cottage in Babylon.

It is possible that Lot’s wife looked back with resentment toward the Lord for what He was asking her to leave behind. We certainly know that Laman and Lemuel were resentful when Lehi and his family were commanded to leave Jerusalem. So it isn’t just that she looked back; she looked back longingly. In short, her attachment to the past outweighed her confidence in the future. That, apparently, was at least part of her sin.

As a new year begins and we try to benefit from a proper view of what has gone before, I plead with you not to dwell on days now gone nor to yearn vainly for yesterdays, however good those yesterdays may have been. The past is to be learned from but not lived in. We look back to claim the embers from glowing experiences but not the ashes. And when we have learned what we need to learn and have brought with us the best that we have experienced, then we look ahead and remember that faith is always pointed toward the future. Faith always has to do with blessings and truths and events that will yet be efficacious in our lives.

So a more theological way to talk about Lot’s wife is to say that she did not have faith. She doubted the Lord’s ability to give her something better than she already had. Apparently, she thought that nothing that lay ahead could possibly be as good as what she was leaving behind." (from the article "The Best is Yet to Be by Jeffery R. Holland")

The Spirit whispered "in 2009 you learned to stop looking longingly back. You have been moving forward." I felt such joy. Let me explain, I think it was in early 2006 that life felt perfect. Seriously. That was until one day I was counseling with the Lord about a situation and the answer I got was not the answer I wanted, so I didn't listen. I moved forward veering from the life path I knew the Lord had planned for me in this one SMALL area. I did not realize the impact it would have on my life.

In the following years I found myself looking back longingly and those seemingly perfect times and wondered how to get them back. I tried very hard. Although I didn't turn into a pillar of salt I did experience much heartache over my decision. I cried more than I was proud of, and spent WAY to many hours thinking and talking about it.

In 2009 I started moving forward, this time on the path that the Lord wanted me too. I feel lighter, more free.

So what goals am I going to set for 2010? I am not sure yet, but you can bet I will listen and follow what the Lord has planned for me.

And I will always remember "Faith is always pointed to the future."

Kids Say The Dardest Things

I substituted Primary today, the 4 & 5 year old class. Oh, how adorable. Seriously, the cutest 3 girls. I love being in Primary, it feel so natural and lovely.

So, in class "M" volunteered to say the opening prayer, see if you can pick out my favorite parts:

Dear Heavenly Father
Thank we can be here today
Thank that my Aunt & Uncle live together
although sometimes my Aunt lives with her boyfriend
Thank that my Grandpa feels better
Thank that mine and my sister's livers are okay
(this is where I then whispered "thank you for letting us come to primary")
Thank you for letting us come to primary
(again I whispered "thank you for the prophet")
("M" whispers "I know how to say prayers by myself")
Thank for Jesus
In the name of Jesus Christ
Amen

I was laughing so hard...but only on the inside.

The rest of class made me want to record our conversations...
Seriously, so funny.

Oh, and I have been called as a PERMANENT substitute teacher in the Primary. Yay!

Thoughts of School

School, school, schmool.

I started my MBA program and already have one class done. YAY! Okay, so it's not really done, we will have several more assignments due throughout the semester. But still...I don't have to go to that class anymore.

Here are some things I have realized since I started my program.
1. I need to exercise a lot more if I am going to have enough energy to do school and work fulltime.
2. I love being back in school. LOVE IT.
3. I may not be as smart as I think I am.
4. I can study AND I can don't really mind reading textbooks. (This is HUGE because for my bachelors I didn't really study a lot and I think I only read 1 text book completely...the rest I may have read a chapter or so.)
5. Graduate level classes are completely different than my undergraduate classes...they are more about applying the concepts to work we actually do right now. I LOVE IT.
6. I may have forgotten how to juggle all the things I have to do each day...this could get really bad.
7. I am, surprisingly, okay with with the sacrifices I have to make right now to get through school.
8. I don't know if everyone affected by my sacrifices is okay with them.
9. I hate campus parking. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
10. I am one of those people who wants to share what they learned in class with other people. Which kind of makes me a little boring...I will try harder to only share interesting stuff.
11. I need to remember to not neglect my blog...I have millions of things stuffed in my head that I want to share.

All in all, even though school is kind of kicking my trash right now...I love it.

New Adventure

I will officially be a University of Utah UTE on Saturday. I am excited and nervous and scared and happy. So many emotions and so many questions.

The biggest question: Who in their right mind thought having the first day of school on a Saturday was a good idea? 8 HOURS of school? Hmmmm.

**Important notice** In 2 years when I have completed my MBA you MAY be required to call me "Master D'Nell" Or "Master Delia". Just thought I would give you a heads up. You can start now if you really want.

What's Your Fortune?

Ssssshhhhh...
This is a secret.
Sometimes I still play "fortune teller" with my some really great friends.
I may or may not have played tonight.

Let's just say IF I did play...
Then I hope my fortune comes true!
