I would like to share an incident that happened several weeks ago. I had just started a new job, and really enjoying what I was doing. I was happy in my personal life, and really felt at peace. Then one day I get an email from my brother Joe. Not unusual, he emails occasionally. The title of this email was "Take That" there was not message just an attachment. Weird...did he want me to have something...or is he just being rude? Well what was the attachment? A picture of his son, my nephew, who I fondly call "Big Dave the Korean" or "Gim Bop." Normally I would have been really excited and happy to get a picture of David, since he lives in Arizona and I don't get to see him much. But not this time...he was sticking his tongue out at me...mocking his favorite Aunt! What could I do? I had to call and tell him I was disappointed...but then...instead of saying sorry or that it was a joke...he just tried to eat the phone! The kids these days...I think the parents are to blame!
Okay, so you don't think I am a mean aunt...let me tell you where the nicknames came from. "Gim Bop" is the Korean word for a California Roll. One of the only words I remember. My brother and his wife didn't have a name for their baby until it was born, or at least wouldn't share the name, and I had to call the baby something...so I called him Gim Bop. I think it is rather cute! Next, "Big Dave the Korean" David is named after my oldest brother who passed away in 1989 and people used to call him Big Dave because he was a big guy and he was a wrestler (he won a gold medal in 1976 at the Junior Olympics in Calgary Canada). One of the first pictures of saw of David (my nephew) he had just been born and was sitting up and he looked huge and he looked mean (I don't think birth is a pleasant experience)...I had pictures of him being a wrestler...so "Big Dave the Korean" was born...it is his wrestling name!
